How does God see business? Are there some long-term goals or purposes for a Christian-owned business? You've probably heard it said that a Christian-owned business should have one unifying purpose: to glorify God. But what does that mean?
God Himself is a worker and deemed that (legitimate) work is good.
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. (Genesis 1:1)
And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. (Genesis 1:31a)
God gave us the privilege of sharing in His work by caring for His creation.
The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. (Genesis 2:15)
Work (i.e. business) should glorify Him.
Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. (Colossians 3:23-24)
Serving in the ministry of Jesus Christ.
"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5:14-16)
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age." (Matthew 28:19-20)
Providing for the needs of the people in the business: employees, partners, and suppliers as well as "owners."
But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. (1Timothy 5:8)
Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. (James 5:4)
A business must be a healthy one that values and pursues excellence and continual improvement in all areas.
The house that I am to build will be great, for our God is greater than all gods. (2 Chronicles 2:5)
Then I said to them, "You see the trouble we are in, how Jerusalem lies in ruins with its gates burned. Come, let us build the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no longer suffer derision." (Nehemiah 2:17)
